Iceland Fire, Ice & Northern Lights

Earth science your students can stand on

In Iceland, students stand on the forces they study in Earth science. At Þingvellir, they walk the rift valley where two tectonic plates pull apart. The geyser Strokkur erupts every few minutes, and nearby geothermal plants turn that same underground heat into the hot water and electricity Icelanders use every day. Along the South Coast, waterfalls, black sand, and North Atlantic waves show erosion still at work, and at Jökulsárlón, icebergs calve from a retreating glacier into a lagoon that did not exist a century ago. Northern Lights viewing is treated as field science: students read cloud cover, darkness, and solar activity, then work with whatever the sky gives them.

Plate Tectonics

Stand in the rift at Þingvellir, where the cliffs and fissures of Almannagjá show the North American and Eurasian plates pulling slowly apart.

Explore this objective

At Þingvellir National Park, students walk the marked route through Almannagjá and observe cliffs, fissures, and the widening rift between the North American and Eurasian plates. Our Storyteller Guides connect those visible landforms to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Iceland’s volcanic activity, and the slow movement that continues to reshape the island.

Use Strokkur and the Hellisheiði Geothermal Exhibition to explain how underground heat moves water, produces electricity and hot water, and shapes Icelandic communities and daily life.

Explore this objective

At erupting Strokkur, students see underground heat and pressure expressed at the surface. At the Hellisheiði Geothermal Exhibition, they follow that energy into a working system that produces electricity and hot water for the capital region. Together, the two stops show how Iceland turns its geology into infrastructure used in homes, schools, and communities.

At Jökulsárlón, Fellsfjara, and Perlan, students compare field evidence with exhibits to understand glacier flow, calving, and retreat, sediment, changing landscapes, and climate observation.

Explore this objective

At Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and neighboring Fellsfjara, students observe ice moving from glacier to lagoon to ocean. They examine calving, sediment, waves, and the changing shape of the coastline. Perlan’s glacier exhibits then help students compare what they saw in the field with longer-term evidence of glacier retreat and climate change.

Atmospheric Science

Students learn what causes an aurora, from solar particles to Earth's magnetic field, then use official forecasts of cloud cover and solar activity to decide when, and whether, to observe outside.

Explore this objective

Students learn how charged particles from the Sun interact with Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere to create an aurora. Throughout the tour, the guide checks the nightly aurora and cloud forecasts, and the group heads out on the most promising nights, with the weather keeping the final say. Whether the sky produces an aurora or clouds, students compare the forecast with the actual result.

We design each tour with a scaffolded thematic progression wherever the destination and itinerary allow: each day establishes context, gives students evidence to work with, and prepares them for the next idea.

Each day begins with a clear theme and the context students need. At each site, our Storyteller Guides direct attention to the objects, documents, spaces, and stories that make the theme concrete. Short discussions and reflection prompts help students connect the experience to prior learning and carry an idea forward to the next day.

Begin the Iceland Field Study

Depart together on an overnight group flight to Iceland. Before arrival, students locate the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Reykjavík, the Golden Circle, South Coast, and Vatnajökull on a shared map and receive the route’s field questions about plate movement, energy, ice, water, weather, and evidence.

Meet Iceland’s First Settlers and Whales

After arrival and breakfast, visit the Settlement Exhibition, built around the remains of a 10th-century Viking longhouse in central Reykjavík. Continue to Whales of Iceland, where 23 life-size models introduce the species found in Icelandic waters. Beginning tonight, the guide checks the nightly aurora and cloud forecasts, and the group heads out on the most promising nights, with the weather keeping the final say.

Golden Circle

Learning theme/Plate Tectonics, Geothermal Heat & Moving Water

Explore the Golden Circle as a System

Walk the marked route through Almannagjá at Þingvellir, then compare visible rifting with boiling water and steam at the Geysir geothermal area. At Gullfoss, students trace the glacial Hvítá River into its canyon and watch water still carving rock, the same slow work that shaped everything they saw today.

Follow the South Coast’s Changing Landscape

Travel east along the Ring Road to Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, using cliffs, falling water, spray, and sediment as evidence of landscape change. At Reynisfjara, students examine basalt columns, black sand, and offshore sea stacks from the designated viewing area. In Vík, the Lava Show uses real molten lava in a controlled demonstration of volcanic heat, cooling, and rock formation.

Observe Ice in Motion

At Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, students watch icebergs that have broken away, or calved, from the nearby Breiðamerkurjökull glacier drift toward the sea. At neighboring Fellsfjara, commonly called Diamond Beach, waves carry pieces of glacial ice onto the black sand. Students compare the glacier, lagoon, waves, and shoreline to see how ice and water continue to reshape the coast.

From Underground Heat to Usable Energy

Travel west to the Hellisheiði Geothermal Exhibition for a reserved student visit inside a working energy landscape. Exhibits and educators trace the path from underground wells to the electricity and hot water that supply the capital region. On the return to Reykjavík, students compare Strokkur's natural steam with the engineered system they just walked through.

Learning theme/Field Methods & Scientific Uncertainty

See Iceland from Museum to Sky

At Perlan, Reykjavík’s museum of nature, students compare their field observations with exhibits on glaciers, volcanoes, water, and the aurora. At FlyOver Iceland, an immersive simulated flight reveals landscapes from across the country. If the forecast looks promising, the group heads out again for Northern Lights viewing, with the weather keeping the final say.

Learning theme/Synthesis & Global Connections

Bring Iceland’s Systems Together

Close with a guided reflection on the strongest field evidence students collected, from the plate rift at Þingvellir to the glacier lagoon at Jökulsárlón, and the questions still open. Then transfer to Keflavík International Airport for the return flight.
