Arrive in Savannah and let the city introduce itself slowly. Our Storyteller Guides lead an easy evening walk beneath the live oaks and Spanish moss, then the group gathers for a welcome dinner of Southern cooking, a first taste of the food and stories that carry the whole trip.
Tour the Historic District by trolley and on foot, from Johnson Square to Forsyth Park and its landmark fountain, past the antebellum mansions and churches that fill the old city. A guided visit to the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters presents the lives of everyone who lived there, free and enslaved. After dinner, an included ghost tour tells the stories the daytime skips.
Follow the cobblestones down to River Street, where former cotton warehouses now hold shops and restaurants and ships still slide past on the Savannah River. A few blocks up, City Market's open-air courtyard pairs lunch with galleries and live music. Groups that want the view from the water can add an optional riverboat cruise before dinner on the riverfront.
Finish under the oaks. At Wormsloe State Historic Site, a long avenue of live oaks leads to the tabby ruins of Noble Jones's colonial estate and a small museum of its artifacts. At Bonaventure Cemetery, made famous by Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Victorian monuments stand beneath the Spanish moss. Both are quiet, unhurried farewells before the trip turns toward home.
