Iceland is shaped by volcanoes, glaciers, and two continental plates pulling apart. Your group walks the rift between them at Thingvellir National Park, then watches the geyser Strokkur erupt and Gullfoss thunder into its canyon. The South Coast trades waterfalls for black sand beaches, and at Jokulsarlon, icebergs calved from a retreating glacier drift out to sea. A long soak in the Blue Lagoon's geothermal water sends everyone home warm.
Land at Keflavik and meet your guide for the drive into Reykjavik. Begin in the Old Harbour and Grandi district at Whales of Iceland, where 23 life-size whale models introduce the species found in Icelandic waters. In the evening, your guide previews the week and walks the group through how the nightly aurora forecast will decide which nights the group heads out.
At Thingvellir National Park, walk the Almannagja gorge, hear how Iceland adopted Christianity by law at the Althing in the year 1000, and see Thingvellir Church. Continue to erupting Strokkur and the two-stage Gullfoss waterfall, then visit Skálholt Cathedral, the historic center of Icelandic religious life for centuries.
Follow the Ring Road east to Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss, and Reynisfjara, the black sand beach known for basalt columns and offshore sea stacks. In Vik, the Lava Show brings the region's volcanic story indoors with a controlled demonstration using real molten lava.
Today reaches the tour's easternmost point. At Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, icebergs calved from a retreating glacier drift slowly toward the sea, each one a different shape and shade of blue. Just across the road at Diamond Beach, the surf returns some of that ice to shore, where it glitters on black sand until the tide reclaims it. Bring your camera and unhurried time.
Slow the pace on the Reykjanes Peninsula with a long soak in the Blue Lagoon, where warm, mineral-rich geothermal water fills a milky blue pool in the middle of a black lava field. After dark, board the coach for a guided Northern Lights hunt away from city glow. No one can promise the aurora, which is exactly why the hunt is worth taking.
Begin at the Settlement Exhibition, built around the remains of a 10th-century Viking longhouse. Our Storyteller Guide connects the city's first settlers to the Althing and Icelandic sagas. Visit Hallgrímskirkja, Iceland's largest church and a Reykjavík landmark known for its organ and tower, then experience an immersive simulated flight at FlyOver Iceland.
Visit Perlan, Reykjavik's museum of nature, for its glacier, volcano, water, and aurora exhibits. After dark, tonight remains available for another guided Northern Lights outing wherever the forecast looks best. The aurora cannot be guaranteed, but keeping a reserve night gives the group another realistic opportunity to see it.
Trade last impressions on the morning drive to Keflavik International Airport. Your group heads home with photographs of erupting geysers and drifting icebergs, the memory of warm geothermal water under a cold sky, and, if the weather cooperated, a night of northern lights to talk about for years.
