The Faroe Islands are a chain of 18 steep, green islands in the North Atlantic, where villages sit between mountains, cliffs, and the sea. Arrive in Tórshavn and walk through Tinganes, the historic government quarter of turf-roofed red buildings on a rocky point in the harbor. Continue through the timber lanes of Reyn before gathering for a welcome dinner of Faroese specialties.
Walk the marked viewpoint path outside Gásadalur to see Múlafossur Waterfall drop from a sea cliff into the Atlantic. Explore the village, once connected to the rest of Vágar only by a mountain trail, and follow the coast through small communities set between fjords and steep green slopes.
Take the seasonal ferry to Mykines, the westernmost island and an important summer nesting area for Atlantic puffins. Follow the marked coastal trail as puffins move between their burrows and the sea. The walk is the most demanding of the tour and follows open, uneven ground.
Visit Saksun, where a turf-roofed church and working sheep farm sit above a tidal lagoon surrounded by steep mountains. Walk the designated village paths, see how turf roofs remain part of Faroese architecture, and share a home-cooked lunch with local hosts.
Board a boat at Vestmanna harbor and cruise beneath basalt cliffs that rise directly from the sea. The captain threads narrow straits and sea caves while guillemots, razorbills, and fulmars gather on the ledges during nesting season.
Travel to Klaksvík, the fishing and transport center of the Northern Islands, and see the boats and working harbor. Continue to Viðareiði, a village between high mountains and the open sea, with sheep farms, stone walls, and views across the northern coast.
Return to Tórshavn’s harbor and the timber lanes of Reyn. Groups may add an optional visit to the Faroe Islands National Museum or Kirkjubøur, the islands’ medieval church center and one of their most important historic sites. Gather for a farewell dinner of Faroese seafood.
After breakfast, travel to Vágar Airport for the flight home.
