• Fort Monroe and Old Point Comfort, connecting the documented 1619 arrival of the first Africans in Virginia with the Civil War refuge known as Freedom’s Fortress
• Cornland School and the Historical Village at the Dismal Swamp, preserving the story of Black education during segregation and the wider history of the Great Dismal Swamp

Chesapeake & Williamsburg: Community, Faith & Revolution

• Great Bridge Battlefield, where the 1775 battle ended British rule in Virginia and the story of free Black patriot William Flora forms part of the site’s interpretation
• The Williamsburg Bray School, one of the earliest institutions dedicated to Black education in North America
• The African Baptist Meeting House and Burial Ground, the original permanent site of one of the nation’s earliest African American congregations

Jamestown & Washington: History, Memory & Achievement

• Jamestown Settlement for the intersecting experiences of West Central Africans, Virginia Indians, and English colonists in seventeenth-century Virginia
• Washington’s memorials and museums, including the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, National Museum of American History, and National Museum of African American History and Culture
• Arlington National Cemetery and the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, followed by a final evening together over an included farewell dinner

Begin at Hampton University’s Emancipation Oak, where educator Mary Smith Peake taught African American students beginning in 1861 and where the Emancipation Proclamation was read publicly in 1863. Continue to Fort Monroe and Old Point Comfort to connect the documented 1619 arrival of Africans in Virginia with the fort’s Civil War role as Freedom’s Fortress. Return to Chesapeake for the Cornland School and Historical Village at the Dismal Swamp.

Great Bridge & the Norfolk Waterfront

At Great Bridge Battlefield, explore the first major American victory in Virginia during the Revolutionary War and the story of free Black patriot William Flora. Continue to the Norfolk waterfront for harbor views and time along the city’s maritime district, then travel to Williamsburg for a two-night stay.

Yorktown & Black History in Williamsburg

Visit the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown for galleries and living-history settings that examine the Revolution and its consequences. Continue into Colonial Williamsburg, where the Williamsburg Bray School and African Baptist Meeting House and Burial Ground open conversations about education, faith, enslavement, and Black community-building across the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Jamestown & Washington, D.C.

Jamestown to Washington, D.C.

At Jamestown Settlement, use galleries and re-created settings to examine the experiences of West Central Africans, Virginia Indians, and English colonists in early Virginia. Travel north to Washington, D.C., then see the city after dark with an evening memorial tour that includes the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and other landmarks of the National Mall.

Faith, Collections & the American Story

Explore the Museum of the Bible and the National Museum of American History, where objects and exhibitions connect belief, culture, politics, and everyday life. Continue to Washington National Cathedral for its architecture, art, stained glass, and place in the civic and religious life of the nation.

Service, Memory & African American Achievement

Visit Arlington National Cemetery and witness the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Spend the afternoon at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, allowing time for the history and culture galleries, then gather for an included farewell dinner.
